The CRD is amending its Composting Facilities Regulation Bylaw No. 2736 to exempt the Salt Spring Abattoir Society from licensing requirements prior to fully rescinding Bylaw No. 2736 in the coming years.

Since the province strengthened its Organic Matter Recycling Regulation (OMRR) in 2022, key requirements such as odour, pest and environmental protections, are now fully managed through provincial regulation. Recognizing that the CRD will be taking steps to fully rescind its regulations for composting facilities in the near future, Amendment Bylaw No. 4765 removes redundant CRD licensing requirements and fees in the short-term so that the Salt Spring Abattoir Society’s facility can accept local organic materials in alignment with provincial regulations now.
