The Galiano Island Parks & Recreation Commission (GIPRC) is revising its Master Plan. The Commission’s Master Plan provides a direction and focus for the planning, development, operation and maintenance of CRD community parks, shore accesses and hiking and multi-use trails, and the funding of community recreational opportunities for Galiano.
This site is to share information about GIPRC and gather public feedback that will inform the Master Plan for 2026. The Commission will use the feedback gathered via public engagement to make decisions about how to allocate resources and prioritize projects.
Coast Salish Peoples have lived on and cared for the land now known as Galiano Island and its surrounding waters for millennia. GIPRC is currently engaging with First Nations as part of the Master Plan process. So far, we have met with and are working closely with Penelakut Tribe. We are committed to developing our land acknowledgment, to building relationships, and to honouring Indigenous rights, title, and values in our work.
With the support of an operating budget of about $120,000 and 1 maintenance worker, GIPRC operates:
- 5 community park sites (Sticks Park, Sticks West Park, Silú Park, Lord Road Park and Betty Kennedy House and Park)
- 10km of trails including the Sturdies Bay Trail
- 32 shore accesses
- 1 skate park
And funds around 15 community recreation programs with around $45,000 disbursed annually.
Over the past 5 years, the Commission has worked closely with our many shore stewards and volunteers to achieve important goals set out in our last plan, including:
- Developing Silú Park at the north end, including trail construction, benches, picnic tables, and a vault toilet;
- Improving the Zuker (Georgeson) shore access including significant restoration and invasives removal;
- Improving the Matthews/Whipple shore access;
- Working with the CRD on the Betty Kennedy property to manage the house and lands;
- Installing vault toilets at Silú Park and at the Community School / Activity Centre field;
- Managing and maintaining 10km of trails, 32 shore accesses, 5 community park sites and 10 public toilets;
- Improving trail conditions on the Sturdies Bay Trail.
